New to Bastrop? How to Get a Library Card

A library card is one of the easiest ways to settle into Bastrop. The Bastrop Public Library gives city residents a card at no charge, and people outside city limits can join for $25 a year. Bring proof of who you are and where you live.

Who gets a free card?

The library counts you as a resident if you live in or own real property in the City of Bastrop. A post office box does not work as proof. A Bastrop mailing address does not always mean you are inside city limits, so check yours first, or ask us about a specific address.

How much does it cost if you live outside city limits?

Membership Cost
City resident $0
Non-resident, one year $25
Non-resident senior (55+), veteran or person with a disability, one year $20
Non-resident family, one year (check out up to 40 items) $40
Non-resident, six months $15
Replacement card $1

The library notes that its fees can change, and the city’s municipal code has the latest version. Please confirm with the library before you go.

How do you sign up?

  1. Gather what you need. You will verify your identity and current address. The FAQ does not list specific documents, so call 512-332-8880 if you are not sure what to bring.
  2. Fill out the application. The FAQ links to an online application.
  3. Allow a little time. The library says it may take up to 48 hours to get your card.

You must be 18 to apply. Parents or guardians can apply for their children and are responsible for what the children check out.

When is the library open?

The library’s home page lists it at 1100 Church St. with these hours:

  • Monday, Wednesday and Friday: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Tuesday and Thursday: open until 9 p.m. (city pages differ on the opening time, so call first if you plan a morning visit)
  • Saturday: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Sunday: closed

The home page also lists closures on Wednesday, Nov. 11, for Veterans Day and Saturday, Nov. 14, for the car show. It reopens Thursday, Nov. 12, and Monday, Nov. 16, at 10 a.m.

What do you get besides books?

  • Time to read: Items are due three weeks after checkout.
  • Computers and wi-fi: About 30 public computers, plus wi-fi that reaches the parking lot, which is handy while your home internet is still being set up.
  • Storytime: Wednesdays and Fridays at 10:30 a.m. in the Pressley Meeting Room.
  • Online resources: eBooks, Mango Languages, homework help and the Portal to Texas History.
  • Meeting rooms and study booths: Contact the library for details.

What else should you set up after you move?
