Want the story of Bastrop in one easy stop? The Bastrop County Museum & Visitor Center is at 904 Main St. in downtown Bastrop, and admission is $8, with kids 12 and under and active military and veterans free.
When is the museum open?
The Bastrop County Historical Society lists these hours:
- Monday through Saturday: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with last museum entry at 4:30 p.m.
- Sunday: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
It is closed on New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, July 4, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Dec. 26. Call (512) 303-0904 to confirm before you drive over.
What will you see inside?
The museum has a permanent exhibit, special exhibits that change and an archive and collections. The society says most of its artifacts were donated by local families, which gives the place a neighborly feel.
Explore Bastrop County says the artifacts, documents and research trace the county back to its founding in 1832. It also says the museum was recently honored with the Texas Historical Commission’s John L. Nau Award of Excellence in Museums.
Is there something for kids?
Yes. Explore Bastrop County mentions Toads in Town, a downtown scavenger hunt for kids. Ask about it at the desk, and it pairs well with the rest of a downtown walk.
What is coming up at the museum?
The venue calendar lists Baron’s Birthday Bash on Saturday, Nov. 21, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. It also lists the Bastrop Holiday Historic Homes Tour on Saturday, Dec. 12, from noon to 5 p.m. Please confirm details with the society.
How do you make a day of it?
