One of the nicest free things to do in Bastrop is a short walk to see the Bird Junction sculptures. The Lost Pines Art Center describes it as a self-guided tour of six sculptures of native and migratory birds on Chestnut Street, and you can see them any time.
Why does Bastrop have bird sculptures?
Bastrop is a certified Bird City Texas community, and it sits in a migration path for more than 300 bird species, Community Impact reported. In 2024, the City Council approved locations for nine bird statues along Chestnut Street and downtown.
The city runs the program with the Lost Pines Art Center, and it is paid for with hotel occupancy tax funds, donations and grants.
Which birds can you find?
- The barred owl. A tall owl, hand-forged in steel by a local artist, was unveiled in September 2025 outside Film Alley at Hwy. 95 and Chestnut Street.
- The songbirds. Unveiled Jan. 10, 2026, this piece is attached to the railing of a pedestrian bridge at 1408 Chestnut St. The artist scaled it down so it would not overshadow the bridge and the trees around it.
- The peregrine falcon. Unveiled the same day, it stands across the street from the songbirds, Community Impact reported.
The 2024 plans also named a woodpecker in front of the Bastrop Convention and Exhibit Center and a red-tailed hawk.
How do you make a morning of it?
Park near the Convention and Exhibit Center on Chestnut, walk the sculptures, then stop by the Lost Pines Art Center at 1204 Chestnut St. The Art Center is open Wednesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. If you can, go on Saturday, Nov. 7, during the free Bastrop Art Fest.
Keep your eyes up, too. The real birds are part of the show in the Lost Pines.
