Bastrop Oak Owners: Prune Before February to Curb Oak Wilt

If you have oaks in your Bastrop yard, plan any trimming for before February. Texas A&M Forest Service says to avoid pruning or wounding oaks from February through June, and to paint any fresh cut right away, because that helps prevent the spread of oak wilt.

What is oak wilt?

It is a tree disease that has been confirmed in 76 Texas counties, mostly in Central, North and West Texas. All oaks can be infected, but AgriLife says red oaks are the most susceptible, live oaks are in the middle and white oaks are the least susceptible.

Sap beetles can carry it to fresh wounds, and that is why timing matters.

When is the best time to prune?

The Forest Service says the best times are the winter cold, when insect activity is minimal, and the summer heat, when spore production is minimal. It also cautions against unnecessary pruning on stressed trees, especially cuts made only for looks.

How do you protect a tree when you prune?

  • Paint every fresh wound. Year-round, apply a thin coat of latex or pruning paint right after cutting.
  • Watch for other wounds. Mowers, string trimmers, construction and storms can all leave openings, and those get painted too.
  • Be careful with firewood. Pick well-seasoned wood that is dry, with loose bark and cracked ends, and avoid moving firewood from one area to another.

What are the warning signs?

AgriLife says live oaks usually show yellow and brown veins in the leaves. Red oaks may show leaves turning red or brown and can die within about a month of infection. The Forest Service adds that red oaks dying in groups may point to oak wilt.

If you are not sure, ask a certified arborist or forester. The Forest Service has a find my forester tool, and its main office is at (979) 458-6600.

What about the branches you cut?

For trees suspected of oak wilt, the Forest Service lists burning, burying or chipping. If you plan to burn anything, check for a county burn ban first. Our fall yard cleanup post has more on keeping brush away from your home.
