Several Bastrop County ranches sell beef straight to customers. Community Impact reported on Oct. 6, 2026 that local ranchers are adapting to rising beef prices with presales, payment plans and freezer delivery.
What is changing for Bastrop County ranchers?
Cattle are a big part of the local economy. Here are the numbers from the story:
- Cattle sales totaled nearly $27 million in 2022, about 46% of the county’s agricultural sales.
- Cattle inventory in the county fell about 44% from 2021 to 2024, according to USDA estimates.
- Direct-to-consumer food sales are up 42% compared with a decade earlier, according to the USDA Census of Agriculture.
- Beef prices: between 2025 and 2026, ground beef rose 10.1% and roasts rose 14%.
Which local ranches sell beef directly?
Community Impact named four:
- La Tierra Fina (Bastrop): a family-owned ranch established in 2019. It is moving toward preselling each animal and matching customers with purchase sizes that fit their budget and freezer space.
- Watterson Ranch (Bastrop): a multigenerational cattle operation that has expanded to stock customers’ freezers within 75 miles of Bastrop.
- La Estancia Ranch: sells cuts under its Brahman Darlin Beef brand with no minimum purchase, and offers payment plans. Each first quarter-beef buyer gets a free 5-cubic-foot freezer. It also sells tallow skin care products.
- Bastrop Cattle Co.: sources cattle from three family-owned ranches in Bastrop and Fayette counties and has sold directly to customers for six years. It helps buyers choose cuts for half- and whole-beef orders and arranges processing.
Prices and availability change, so please check with each ranch directly.
What does this mean if you are moving here?
If you are coming from a bigger city, this is one of the small pleasures of living around Bastrop: you can often buy from the people raising the food. Ask about freezer space before you order a quarter or a half, since that is a lot of beef.
